How to Create Engaging and Effective Business Presentations
When you’re in a business, you’re in the business of selling. It may be a product, service, topic, concept, or idea. Whatever it is you’re into, there will always be that time when you will need to make a business presentation. Don’t wait until you need to give one before you study about how to go about this. Here are the things that you need to do to create an engaging and effective business presentation.
Know what you’re talking about
The first thing to remember is that you need to know your material. If you don’t know anything about what you’re saying, it will show. Even if you have managed to memorize everything about the presentation but you have no idea what it is about or you don’t understand it perfectly well, you will lose credibility. Your audience will lose interest and will not be impressed.
Keep your audience engaged
Apart from being an expert in the content of your presentation, you must also be good in captivating your audience and keeping them interested in what you’re saying. People nowadays are very busy. They also have very short attention span. You only have a few minutes to make your point and dazzle them. If you lose them at your first sentence then you can say goodbye to potential clients or investors. You must also make it a habit to make eye to eye contact with your audience so they know that you are talking directly to them. Do not look on the ground or fidget while talking. This would make you appear as if you’re not confident about yourself.
Use key phrases
Any seasoned presenter will tell you the importance of key phrases. These are words that you use that provide essential compact information about what you’re going to say in the presentation. Divide the presentation into several parts and each part should have the key phrases included so that the audience will find it easier to understand what kind of message you’re trying to get across.
Give importance to the packaging
Since this is a presentation, then you know very well how packaging is important. From the slide layout to the handouts that you’re giving to the clients, everything should be professionally designed. The slides for example should be easy to follow and understand. Phrases should be read starting from left to right and then top to bottom. Important information should be kept on the top part of the slide since those at the back may not be able to see these with the heads blocking their way.
It’s also important that you limit punctuation and you avoid ALL CAPS. Punctuations seem like unnecessary clutter in the presentation while the use of all capital letters make it seem like you’re shouting. And that’s not something that you want to imply. While it’s good that you try to be creative, you should stay away from things that are too fancy. Flowery borders, fancy fonts, and excessive use of clip art are not professional at all. Choose simple fonts like Verdana, Arial, and Times New Roman for easy reading.
